I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
Write a hook that connects and it’s the reason your audience will continue watching your video (or reading your pitch, email, newsletter.) Write one that doesn’t hit home and that video or newsletter you spent HOURS, OK…DAYS making will be for you and your mom’s viewing pleasure only.
A great hook is the gatekeeper to you going deeper with your people.
You want your hook to create an open loop. That’s fancy speak for “keep your audience on the edge like “Big Little Lies” and “The Last Dance” did to ALLLLLL of us.”
An open loop requires your audience to ask themselves more questions and they need to KEEP watching your piece of content to get those answers.
A closed loop doesn’t invoke curiosity in your audience. #snoorefest
Do you want a few tried-and-true hook methods?
Of course you do.
Here are some to get your wheels turning NAME:
PERSONAL REVEAL: I’ve never shared this before….but a few years ago… (you did what what what?? what?? what???.. I am hooked.)
OLD FOOTAGE: Growing up in a small town…I always thought THIS (great for a founder story or a personal instagram story in order to set up the stage for your product.)
START WITH THE END: (shots of press clips, speaking on stage, awards, a photo of you doing something awesome..) Let me back up a bit and tell you how I got here… (You’re taking me on a journey?! SIGN.ME.UP)
QUESTION: Can you imagine… Want to know the secret to…Are you tired of feeling….Bet you don’t know what the worst part of running my biz is…
BOLD STATEMENT: Everything you’ve learned about BLANK is wrong.
The purpose of the hook is to simply lead someone to the next line of your story.
That is it.
And the line after the hook is to get someone to the next.
You see where I’m going with this.
Happy Hooking. Let me know if you try out any of the above examples or send me an email with your latest content hook and I will take a look at it.
