I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
Of course you do!!
It’s funny, only 24 months ago if you would have asked me if “getting paid to speak” was on my radar I would have looked at you like you had 4 heads.
For whatever reason, I had this notion that to get PAID to SPEAK you really needed like a gillion years of experience, be at the absolute peak top of your game and be a true thought leader in your niche.
Turns out I was dead wrong.
It’s not that any of those thoughts are wrong. But it turns out, people are getting paid to speak at ANY level and at ANY point in their career and starting out at way higher fees than I had ever imagined.
In an Instagram live I did with paid speaker extraordinaire, Jess Estrom, she told me that for someone with not a lot of experience and early on, you can still command a starting fee of upwards of $5000.
LADIES, YOU HEAR THAT!??!
At the very minimum, we should be charging $2000 to speak.
Here’s the thing. YOUR life story is unique and YOUR life experiences are filled with teachable and inspirational moments if you learn how to package them accordingly. And if you think about who inspires you, sometimes if someone is SO FAR out of reach it almost doesn’t feel attainable to your own life.
To use another analogy I prefer getting inspiration from Instagram largely from accounts with not a huge following. Why? Because the insights and aspiration these people put out feels like “wow, I CAN DO THAT TOO.”
If they’re too big, they aren’t relatable to me.
Same thing with your getting paid to speak.
Jess and I talk about how to structure a one-hour talk (it’s all about that sandwich!)
What you should be talking about (dig out those cringe moments y’all!)
And lots more.
Also funny story, Jess had a TikTok that went viral and I went down a stalker rabbit hole that left me in tears, feeling inspired and saying to myself, “I GOTS TO MEET THIS WOMAN!!!”
And then I DMed her if she’d do a live with me. And she said yes!
Always a reminder to put yourself out there -even if you someone is “bigger” than you.
We’re all just trying to do our best, put our messages out in this world and hopefully do it with kind, interesting people around us.
