I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
It is a journey to get to where you want to go.
But don’t stop yet.
You are building your dream life brick by brick…but you might not be able to see it just yet.
In my attempt to clear out stuff before our Lisbon move I found an old journal I had.
These are from the top of 2017 -the year I decided to not go back to corporate America and “give myself 6 months” to see if I could freelance & nurse my esteem back to health (from getting dramatically let go at a start-up) before I would then go BACK to corporate.
It’s the No. 3. For me.
It made me laugh.
Because I STILL FEEL that way all the time.
Like I don’t know what I’m doing.
But I still have an inner gut feeling that I AM on the right path.
A few months later in the year…. “Even though it’s NOT EASY.”
And then this diagram. Look to the left with my “BIG IDEA” and all these tentacles coming out of it.
“First Bites” : my hobby restaurant reviews from a parent perspective platform that I launched when I was working at The TODAY show.
I launched it purely for fun and didn’t have the foresight to monetize or intentionally grow the community. (GAHH #dagger)
“Urban Mom Platform”: a figment of an idea I was mulling over at this time.
Fast forward a year later, I launched Citykin, a content site dedicated to families choosing to buck the expected suburb move and raise kids in the city. (I loved this but again didn’t have the business acumen to monetize this..GAH #dagger)
Video Series: Never happened & I actually cannot recall what I was thinking when I wrote this generic bucket.
You want to know something.
I am doing NONE of my “Big Idea” buckets six years later.
If you mosey on over to my FREELANCE bucket (at this time I did NOT consider myself a founder and did NOT run a business as such) it has:
Social media captions: I had an idea that I would write social captions for people and I’d get paid. It never panned out.
Creative writing copy edit: Huh? No idea what that is. But never happened.
Shoot video: I don’t shoot video anymore for people. That would be a travesty if I did come to think of it.
Edit video: I do not get paid to edit video for people anymore. (the world thanks me)
Field produce: I still do this but it looks VERY different now than it did in 2017
The career map I laid out for myself six years ago looks nothing like what I am doing currently.
But each step was a crucial part of getting to where I am today.
Had I not thrown myself into all of those random projects, there is no way I would be able to pick up and move to Europe, while still maintaining a US-based business.
You do not need all the answers right now.
Sometimes “that gut feeling” is all you need to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Listen to yourself. Like really listen to yourself.
You are creating your own momentum as you read this.
You know if you’re on the right path. And even if you are not at the level you want to be (I know I am not at all), that inner whisper is telling you if you should stay on a certain path.
Cheering you on.
