I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
You might have noticed I’ve started talking more boldly about AI as it relates to your storytelling & content strategy (or maybe you have not and that’s OK too because for the love of God we get too much content thrown our way)
It’s me. I’m part of the problem.
Moving on.
Your stories are your superpower. Full stop.
Research shows that businesses who use storytelling are 60% more likely to be perceived as innovative, generate 3 times more leads, and make 20% more sales compared to those that, well…don’t.
But telling great stories isn’t easy: It takes time to concept, write, storyboard, record, edit, and produce great ideas into great stories.
And knowing THIS, I had no choice but to get serious about AI. ****and I did.
Because while storytelling might be second nature to me, for most business owners, it’s like learning a foreign language.
Yet, it’s becoming crucial to showcase your humanity in your marketing. (Ironic, right? We need to be more human because of AI.)
Still not convinced? Let me hit you with three reasons why you need to up your storytelling game ASAP:
1. You can have a mental health crisis
I learned this in a huge way this past year when I fell into a pretty dark and sad place after I moved to Lisbon from NYC.
I literally didn’t work for almost three months.
But my community rallied around me.
My consistent strategic storytelling through the years allowed me to go off the grid, cancel a launch and focus on my mental health…all while still making money because the trust built up through personal storytelling gave me this gift.
I had a big uptick in my power hour bookings.
My email list grew.
It’s like intuitively my people (YOU) knew I was in a down mode….but my business did not miss a beat.
Takeaway: Loyal followers support you through thick and thin if you’ve been consistently showing up for them.
2. You can diversify your revenue
Making money from ONLY clients is a scary thing. (hello recession, budget cuts & new competition.)
Relying on ONLY word-of-mouth is a scary thing. (you are not in control of your own reputation.)
These two points above WERE my business model for years.
It worked…until it eventually did not anymore.
It was only when I started sharing my expertise online that new revenue streams appeared – workshops, masterminds, speaking gigs, digital products.
Takeaway: Intentional storytelling opens up money-making opportunities you’ve never even dreamed of.
3. It’s a credibility booster
We’ve all heard the “like, know, trust” mantra ad nauseam. But here’s the thing – it’s true.
And storytelling? It’s like hitting the fast-forward button on that process.
The hardest part of gaining momentum is the trust factor. (Who the hell are you? I’m sorry – what do you do again? Where did you come from? You did what before? Why have I never heard of your name before?)
Case in point.
It took me less than a year to make six-figures from the “other revenue” opportunities that came my way from personal brand storytelling work….vs. when I was running my production company, it took me 3 years to hit that six figure mark.
Takeaway: Storytelling isn’t just nice to have in 2024 – it’s your ticket to next-level influence and impact.
There are many other reasons why you need to make storytelling a priority in 2024, but put simply:
It lays the foundation for next-level influence and impact.
