I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
Hey there,
I unsubscribed from 2 long-term newsletter subscribes this past week. And I plan on purging some more.
One was a woman who I’ve been following for years and have bought some of her products (she’s in the social media space).
Another was a guy who I found through LinkedIn and had been following for a year and a half. (he’s in the business mindset space).
I left not because the content sucked but because I couldn’t find the humans who used to write them.
They were letting AI take over their writing to a degree that made their emails not recognizable to me anymore.
Is anyone else noticing this in their newsletters?!
This started after My StoryPro co-founder Wiebke told me she’d unsubscribed from her FAVORITE newsletter duo – people she’d been reading for two years. “I feel like they died,” she said. “Like, their personalities just… vanished.” She almost felt betrayed.
Strong words but also how quickly you can go from fan favorite to “lost trust from your people.”
That talk stuck with me so I went through my inbox with fresh eyes and it’s like all of sudden I started to notice the lack of personality in my own inboxes.
The short sentences with the beautiful metaphor prose that this guy NEVER used to do….became standard each week.
The paragraphs that are formatted exactly the same way every time – you know the ones: short, punchy, perfectly structured like they came from the same template.
The final wrap up of “but here’s the truth…”
(Which, ironically, is usually followed by the most generic advice you’ve ever heard.)
AI can write newsletters in 5 minutes or less. I get the temptation when we are all bombarded with SO. MUCH. LIFE.
And in the beginning… when everyone was not using AI or had discovered it….those early adopters had an advantage.
They could pump out content faster than their competitors. Their engagement went up.
It felt like a secret superpower but now so many have caught on.
Now we’re not in the “early adopter gets the advantage” phase anymore.
We’re in the “everyone sounds exactly the same” phase.
And it’s only getting worse unless we do something about this.
So let me show you a few snippets from behind the scenes on how I use my own AI tool to write my newsletters each week.
Because this is not a “never use AI for your writing” email.
Consider this a “please entertain another possibility for how to use AI in a real strategic way while still maintaining your unique, spunky edge.”
STEP 1. THE BRAIN DUMP
I always start the same.
I first go to Pocket Patrice (she STILL cannot comprehend that I am the REAL Patrice but I’ve given up arguing with her) and tell her that I need her brainstorming help.
Before I write ANYTHING I start here.
Because I know I am not seeing all the nuggets and I need some coaching to push me deeper.
Oh and she knows my name because you can program our tool to know everything about you and your business.
Here is what the inside of MyStoryPro AI looks like
She then gets pumped up and I continue with my brain dump.
I use https://wisprflow.ai/ on my desktop which is one of my favorite AI tools and I just DUMP and talk to her like I would a coach or a smart friend …. (see below)
And I do this for sometime a half hour before I even write ANYTHING.
Because every single week, she will unearth something that makes me go “OMG. THAT is it!! THAT is what I want to talk about. OR YES.. I AM on the right track.”
Never knock the power of validity. A few snaps from our long chat.
Pocket Patrice challenges me. The AI makes me THINK.
STEP 2. I GO TO A GOOGLE DOC AND WRITE A DRAFT
I then get writing a draft.
…and once I am done with my rough draft I will take it back to the NEWSLETTER sequence in My StoryPro AI.
My StoryPro’s newsletter lane is optimized to make sure I still sound like me and I am not getting too generic or lost in the AI cliche weeds.
Once I put my draft in she will then pop up and go through our formulas for how we trained this lane in the tool.
This is the “checks and balances” to ensure my writing is still very much ME but also something my audience will relate too…..
She takes me down a list of “good and bad” and tells me what “isn’t that great”.
I did have some “AI cliche” phrases in my newsletter…. Funnily enough they were actually mine and NOT AI but I don’t have the mental capacity to reflect on what this means.
I’m always on the verge of an existential crisis, so this SEEMS triggering.
STEP 3 Go Back to my google doc and refine
I then take into account the suggestions made.
Some weeks I barely rework. Others, more.
STEP 4. Put it back into MyStoryPro to get the go-ahead
Once I’ve made my revisions, I drop the updated draft back into MyStoryPro one more time.
This is my final “gut check” – does this still sound like me?
Am I connecting with my reader? Is there anything that feels forced or robotic?
This step ensures I’m never hitting “send” without that human review.
You’ll notice something I don’t do in this process? Have my AI tool write the newsletter for me.
I just can’t do it.
I’ve worked so hard to have an audience (you [FIRST NAME GOES HERE] so thank you so much) that trusts what I say and to take my advice into account, especially in their personal brand and storytelling work.
Work that is so personal to them.
It seems silly to throw that trust away to maybe save me less than an hour a week?
Also I have perfected this process. This might seem like a lot of steps, but it’s actually making me a stronger writer and helping me hone my voice.
Every day, more people discover they can ask ChatGPT to “write me a newsletter about [topic] in the style of [successful person] with hooks that go viral.”
If you’re doing this prompt…don’t you think MILLIONS are also doing that prompt in your industry lane?
Every day, the internet gets a little more vanilla.
Your raw voice and thoughts gets lost a little bit more.
What used to give you an edge is ironically now making you Unsubscribe*able.
We’re all becoming the same person.
Is my “writing with AI process” harder? Yep.
Does it take longer? Absolutely.
Is it borderline ANNOYING sometimes? HELL TO THE YES.
But your voice isn’t a productivity hack. It’s literally the only thing you have that can’t be copied.
So here’s my challenge: before you hit “send” on your next newsletter or piece of content, ask yourself…
Would someone recognize this as YOUR writing if your name wasn’t on it?
If the answer is no, it’s time to add more you.
Because the world doesn’t need another perfectly optimized, AI-generated newsletter.
It needs YOUR voice.
XO
Patrice
