I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
“But Patrice, my back story is SO MUCH. Where do I even start??”
I hear this a lot from entrepreneurs. You’ve done a lot. You’ve lived through a lot of jobs, transitions, bad hair trends, bad partners, questionable nightlife decisions (and made it the other side) peaks, valleys, therapy breakthroughs.
When it’s time to keep the relevant, compelling parts of your backstory that relate to your business, how do you even edit?
When in overwhelm & doubt, talk about your WHY on camera first. The rest of your story will become easier to edit.
You don’t need to video vomit your whole life story off the bat.
One of my students, Aneri, had never shared her TRUE why until a few months ago. She was too overwhelmed by her own back story.
And while we all don’t have an inspirational epic backstory of leaving an arranged marriage and family estrangement as our why, your why is still REALLY IMPORTANT AND INSPIRATIONAL to your ideal audience.
What I love about her simple reel is she wasn’t ready to use her voice yet, but do you not feel more connected to her? Oh and she said she got TONS of new business after posting this. It’s OK to start with only your face and text on screen.
Maria is another great example of someone who didn’t know where to start on her Founder Story so we started with her WHY.
It was the first time she has spoken directly to her audience about growing up really poor and there never being enough money for diapers in her house. The FUEL behind her entire business.
Since that video, Maria has gone on local and National TV talking about her why and her mission to help postpartum mothers in need.
What is holding you back from sharing your backstory?
Like the DEEP parts of your backstory that is your truth. Not the surface elements that – yes are a part of your story – but the parts that would make someone go WOW. THIS STORY IS AMAZING.
That’s what we’re aiming for here.
If you want to dig deep with me in a small, supportive setting this Fall!
I am launching my second private cohort where I will take on a limited number of founders and hand-hold you through the entire process of writing and putting it to video.
It’s going to be GOOD!
