I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
She turned her trauma into triumph.
Her bullies into bucks.
Last year 19-year-old Tania took in more than $1M in sales and says it was only when she started leaning into her backstory did her company explode.
I dare you not to get emotional watching this clip of 19-year-old Tania pitch the Sharks. (this is the only video I found that has the whole thing so I just skip past random dude commenting. )
OR here is a 2-minute clip when Mark Cuban makes her an offer and practically cries himself if you have no time.
She launched her organic eyebrow growth and skincare company in 2017, years after getting bullied over her “bushy, thick and unruly” eyebrows in elementary school.
The same kids who bullied her are now some of her best customers.
What I love about Tania’s story is how relatable it is. Many of us have been bullied or made to feel uncomfortable in our own skin. Imagine if you took your source of pain, shame or embarrassment and turned it inside out?
I bet if you think about your business and why you started it there is a big emotional reason -other than just to make $ or not have a boss.
How are you sharing that story?
Are you sharing that story?
What universally emotional themes can you identify in your backstory leading up to the point where you started your business (or side hustle?)
If you are uncomfortable thinking about some of those moments that is a good sign.
THOSE are the bits that should be part of your story that lives (ideally) in a video and on your About page.
What Tania is doing in the skincare space isn’t anything new. There are hundreds of other companies who have come before her and have way deeper pockets…but with one impactful and relatable founder story, she has cut through a crowded space.
And guess what…. You can too
If you want to dig deep with me in a small, supportive setting this Fall, I am launching my second private cohort where I will take on a limited number of founders and hand-hold you through the entire process of writing and putting it to video. Oh…and you get to use my editing team.
