I currently live in Brooklyn with my three little boys and husband. What can I say, I’m the unofficial -but official - Queen in my house. I love weird combinations of food (more on that later), going out (MOMS CAN DANCE TOO), and seeing the "A-HA" look on a founder's face when they unleash the story that has been buried in them and their business for way too long.
If someone came up to you and asked you why you do what you do….do you know what you’d say? (without you word vomiting and without the person getting that GLAZED look which is Universal Human Sign for STFU!!)
So do you?
Rachael didn’t.
Meet Rachael who just wrapped my Founder’s Fire cohort (check out this beautiful video she wrote and filmed but we edited….and yes I teach you how to do all of this.)
She knew who she served in her newly formed business –perfectionist seeking moms as she once was -but the way she originally told her Founder story about WHY she felt so passionate about this (she quit her executive-level job to change career paths) was missing a lot of elements.
She wanted podcasts, more speaking requests, a bigger platform to have more impact on the moms she services.
But she also knew there WERE A LOT OF MOM COACHES. And she was different, but if you can’t communicate what you know in your gut, that is super frustrating.
She came to me struggling with her story. There was just so much.
Oh and she had never made a video before like this or understood how to write a story in video script form.
What we discovered in this cohort together (sign up for the Founder’s Fire waitlist here)
Was that:
Through the 12-week process of me, the other amazing women and my super star Emmy-winning TODAY show reporter Joelle Garguilo co-teaching alongside…. Rachael was able to nail the story she wanted to tell and one she felt represented the true inner work of why she blew up her fancy corporate job to work for herself.
This seemingly “easy” WHY exercise is not that easy.
Most people tend to start with WHAT they do (and not the why).
Most people tend to give stock or straight up boring AF WHY answers.
For example, “To make the world a better place. To be my own boss…I’m a serial entrepreneur…help my clients INSERT TASK.”
Those responses aren’t REALLY your true WHY.
What is your calling? Your conviction? Your reason for existence? (stay with me people…I am not leaving the planet but we are on the introspection rocketship together here.)
I bet your WHY goes much much deeper and you’ve never allowed yourself the time or space to really articulate that or even publicly claim it. I get it…. We are always our worst client. Oh and this work takes some willingness to get uncomfortable and possibly face some uncomfortable truths.
DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER PEOPLE.
